Decorating My Dream Apartment

Hi friends! I recently renovated the downstairs apartment in my family home. The goal was to update the space and make it into a place that is finally my own. This is my first apartment and I get the opportunity to customize every aspect? How many people can say that?

I’d love to recap the process of finding contractors, working with contractors, and buying materials and new appliances but I will save that for another day! This particular post is about how I decorated my dream space. It’s been a few months since the renovations concluded and I moved in, so I am still in the thick of decorating and establishing the final home for things but I’ve learned a bit along the way that I thought I would share!

Decor Tips! 〰️

I am an artificial plants kind of girl!

And Etsy has some great quality options! I was looking in my typical Amazon and Target for good artificial plants/trees but as usually Etsy had my back. I was able to find this beautiful planter and Monstera plant for under $150 on Etsy and it adds such a beautiful touch to my bedroom! The fact that it comes with the planter and ships with no issues is so worth the price. It also has great height. I’ll have it linked here: Etsy: Faux Monstera Plant

I am also an accent chair kind of girl!

I love a good accent chair! I wanted to put one in my living room but unfortunately I didn’t have enough space. I was able to put an accent chair in my bedroom though! I think the hardest thing to decide on when decorating a place is choosing color. Wall colors, couch colors, or accent chair colors. I would say that was the hardest thing I had to do when decorating but I chose to go with a mostly neutral pallet. In the case of the accent chair I went with a green chair that goes really well with the green plant that I placed next to it. I went with a green velvet tufted side chair from Wayfair. I’m obsessed with Board and Batten Walls!

A new obsession that came along with preparing to renovate a new space is learning about yourself and the design ideas you enjoy. One of the styles that I just could not get out of my mind was board and batten walls! I loved this style so much that me and my sister ended up doing it ourselves! I have a short Tiktok of how we did it, linked here: DIY Board and Batten

We loved doing this so much that we want to do it again. It’s such an easy way to elevate a space so all renovations going forward will include some variation of a board and batten wall.

Lights will set the vibe!

My house is on the older side so you can imagine how exciting it has been to make these updates. Instead of traditional light fixtures I went with recessed lights! Recessed lights, sometimes referred to as can lights require holes to be cut in the ceiling for the lights to fit snuggly into the ceiling. I chose thin circular daylight recessed lights from Amazon. They came in a pack of 24 and were perfect for my entire apartment. The change in the amount of light that now exists in the space is (no pun intended) night and day! It’s so much brighter and the light is so much more even. Amazon is a great place to look for most things, but it was awesome to find affordable good quality lighting as well!
